John Case
John is a Ph.D. student in Acoustics at Penn State University who is set to graduate in Fall 2026.
This summer, John is researching the physics behind the sounds that frozen lakes and rivers make when people ice skate or throw objects onto the ice. Studying ice in this way helps researchers better understand larger ice sheets in the Arctic and Antarctic, which can impact naval activities in those regions.
Originally from upstate New York, John earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hartford in 2019 before pursuing his doctoral degree at Penn State.
Outside of research, he is an avid musician, woodworker, and visual artist who is currently creating glass sculptures. He also enjoys gardening and has kept carnivorous plants in the past. John served as president of the Penn State chapter of the Acoustical Society of America from 2021 to 2023.
As he prepares to defend his dissertation this August, he is excited to wrap up his Ph.D. research and take the next step toward his goal of becoming a senior research engineer or professor in the Department of Defense or Department of the Navy space!
