Daniel Abramson

Dan is pursuing a degree in Engineering Science at Penn State, with minors in Engineering Mechanics and Physics. His PIPELINE project, Absorption of Electromagnetic Metamaterials through Temporal Modulation, explores how to increase the electromagnetic absorption of a metamaterial by applying a high-frequency bias. Metamaterials are engineered structures where the geometry enables properties and behaviors beyond the base material itself. By biasing his metamaterial with a high-frequency RF signal (around 4–8 GHz), Dan induces nonlinear effects that can increase the material’s total absorption.

: Dan is originally from Fairfax, Virginia. He enjoys spending time outdoor by hiking and traveling when he’s not busy with classes or research.
: Dan is a member of the Penn State Blue Band, where he plays trumpet. This past year, he also served as a Guide for his section, helping support and lead other students in the band community.
: One of Dan’s favorite parts of the PIPELINE experience was the opportunity to present his research to ONR officials in Washington, D.C., and at Penn State. He also valued the people he met and worked alongside throughout the program.

PIPELINE played a major role in shaping Dan’s next steps by giving him hands-on technical experience and confirming his interest in research. Because of this opportunity, Dan plans to pursue a PhD in Electrical Engineering, with the long-term goal of working as a research engineer in a national lab.
