Acoustics graduate student wins best paper award at international conference

John Case, a PIPELINE participant and graduate student in acoustics at Penn State’s College of Engineering, received the Best Paper Award at the Acoustics 2023 Conference in Sydney, Australia. The event, held from December 4–8, 2023, was hosted by the Acoustical Society of America and the Australian Acoustical Society.

John’s award-winning paper, “Marine and Lacustrine Ice Fracture Detection,” explores the use of machine learning to detect and classify ice fractures through their acoustic signals. His research has the potential to benefit climate science, fisheries management, and the understanding of cultural impacts in icy environments.
